Soft seats: bold vision!
Helston Old Chapel Cushion Appeal
It’s time to up the comfort levels of the chapel. We know the pews are not exactly snuggly and you can spot our regulars by who brings a cushion with them to events!
It’s ok, we’ve got a plan…
Thanks to a fabulous volunteer duo (Jude and Catherine) from Helston Makes It, we hope to create a unique cushion for each pew, transforming wooden boards into comfy benches. Our cushions will be inspired by church hassocks (kneeling cushions) and will feature community-made textile panels themed around: Helston 2054.
As with all things at Helston Old Chapel, to pull this off we will need some help from our community!
There are two ways to support our Cushion Appeal:
"Plump up our pews" by becoming a cushion sponsor!
You can donate to sponsor the community-make of a pew cushion for the chapel. We’ve been amazed at the support we’ve received at the chapel so far (thank you!) We also know that everyone has a different budget regardless of how much they want to support us. So you can donate £20, £50 or £100 (whichever works for you) to help us cover the material costs (foam, fabric, thread…) of each cushion. You’ll get your name added to a community-made bespoke panel on your cushion in exchange for your donation.
"Weave Your Vision into Helston's Future" by becoming a Community Maker!
We’re hosting our first drop-in cushion creation workshop on 5th October from 1-4pm at the chapel as part of the national Fun Palaces scheme.
No sewing or creative experience is necessary and all of the materials will be provided.
Just come along with an idea about something you want to see in Helston in 2054 and our crack creative team will help you to turn your vision into cushion reality! Each panel will have a label celebrating the designer.
Practical details:
-
Please register to join the workshop by 1st October.
-
The workshop will take place at Helston Old Chapel between 1pm and 4pm.
-
Anyone can join the workshop but under 16s will need some help from an accompanying adult.
-
You can drop-in for 10 minutes, 1 hour, 3 hours or whatever you feel like and if you don’t finish your cushion you can either take it away with you or leave it with us for someone else to carry on.
-
Each long cushion will have 5 panels on the top and you’ll be working on one of these. We need to make 110 panels on 22 cushions overall!
-
There is a large pay and display car park opposite the Helston Medical Centre, Trelawney Rd, Helston TR13 8AU. This is a 5-10 minute walk away. It is possible to drop-off and pick-up immediately outside the chapel building.
-
There is level access from the tarmac path into the side door of the chapel. There is space inside the chapel for wheelchairs but do let us know in advance if you’re coming. If we can support you at our event in other ways please contact us on hello@trevowhelston.co.uk
-
We currently have limited facilities at our new venue.
-
Please be aware that we will be using an accessible portaloo for this event.
-
Our events may be filmed or photographed and the material may be used by Trevow Helston CIC for evaluation, promotion or other projects. Please be aware that it is your responsibility to inform members of your group that this will be happening.

Why 2054? Trevow Helston CIC’s first lease of the chapel is for thirty years. The time to start dreaming about our community’s future begins now. What do you want for Helston by 2054?
