About the event

Join the Chapel Street Quartet from Penzance for an evening exploring the expressive range of the string quartet, spanning warmth, beauty, memory and landscape.


Opening the programme is William Grant Still’s lyrical and characterful Lyric Quartette, which paints musical portraits of three of his friends, followed by Caroline Shaw’s atmospheric Plan & Elevation, inspired by the gardens of Dumbarton Oaks. Shostakovich’s short but intensely personal 7th quartet, written in memory of his first wife, brings the first half to a dramatic conclusion.


After the interval, Borodin’s much-loved 2nd string quartet brings the evening to a lyrical close, with the cello taking centre stage in some of its most memorable melodies.


Together, these four distinctive works create a vivid and varied soundscape, revealing the rich possibilities of the string quartet. The full programme will be:
