About the event

The Postman's Grave

This event is part of Wordplay for Winter

Ticketed - booking required.

Hosken (1861-1953), Helston’s “postman poet”, grew up in poverty on Pig Street and spent his life walking, working and writing his way through hardship. He wrote about injustice, vagrancy and the outsider’s view of the world, and he ended his days as a bard of Cornwall. He is buried in Helston cemetery beside his wife, close to the chapel that is now Trevow.

Begin in the warmth of the chapel, where a professional actor brings his poems to life, giving voice to a poet who spent much of his life unheard. Then step outside as the actor leads the group to Hosken’s graveside, where his words will be read aloud once more, weather permitting, on the ground he’s resting in and a short walk from where we began.

It’s an intimate, atmospheric and moving way…
