Creative Writer Wanted

Join Us in an Innovative Two-Part Storytelling Adventure

UNTOLD: Helston's Unexpected Stories breaks new ground in how we engage with our community’s past. This unique collaboration between the Museum of Cornish Life and Trevow Helston CIC, who manage the newly opened Helston Old Chapel, will present one remarkable life story across two intimate public sharings - a storytelling format that allows a local audience to experience history in a new way.

We're looking for a writer to craft an extraordinary story inspired by the life of a real Helstonian, now at rest in Helston Cemetery, who lived 100-150 years. The Museum's volunteer research team is currently uncovering remarkable stories of local people whose lives took unexpected turns - from global adventurers to local pioneers. Our selection team will select one story in the coming weeks.

Like a TV drama split across two episodes, audiences will gather first at the Museum of Cornish Life to discover the early years of this remarkable Helstonian's life, then reunite the following evening at Helston Old Chapel to experience the continuation of their journey.

Your role will be to use carefully researched historical material as a starting point to create two engaging 30-40 minute monologue-style pieces that bring this person's story to life for local contemporary audiences. Working with a professional director, performer and musician, you'll help bridge the gap between past and present, creating an intimate and meaningful connection between a past Helston resident and our community today.

This innovative project marks the beginning of a wider initiative to share more unexpected stories within our community's heritage, creating surprising connections between past and present Helstonians.

We're seeking someone who:

Has a passion for uncovering and sharing human stories

Can creatively use historical research to create vivid, engaging narratives

Brings fresh ideas to connect past and present

Enjoys collaborative creative processes

Has a wealth of writing experience or is a new emerging creative voice (all levels of experience considered)

You'll receive:

Access to fascinating research from the Museum of Cornish Life's volunteer research team

Mentoring support from an experienced writer (who has turned historical research into performance monologues)

Collaboration with professional theatre makers

Fee of £825 total (equivalent to 1 week at £573 plus 2 additional days at £126 each)

Key dates:

Application deadline: 19th January 2025 (midnight)

Decision made: 22nd January 2025

Required availability: 19th & 20th February 2025 (rehearsal attendance)

Public sharings: 26th & 27th February 2025

To apply, send the following to hello@trevowhelston.co.uk:

1. Your CV

2. Share your thoughts on this question (in writing, video, or another format that works for you):

We will be sharing a previously unknown story inspired by someone who was a part of Helston’s community many years ago. Why is this relevant for modern day residents of Helston?
